Early Modern Period (1450 - 1750)

  • THREE major changes
  1. Forging of New Global Economy
    • World trade = more complex and now included the Americas
  2. Biological Exchange
    • Food, animals, and people were exchanged
    • Food exchange = increased populations
    • Europeans who came into Americas spread their diseases and decimated populations
    • Horses changed lives of Americas
  3. New Empires
    • New Empires based on advanced technology:
      • Weapons (gunnery)
      • Shipbuilding
  • Several political features were preserved:
    • Cultural stabilities (global contacts did not greatly affect culture patterns)
  • Social change = "work harder"
    • Child labor increased
    • Countries demand more out of inhabitants (ex. China changed currency to silver, made people work harder, greater expectations)
    • Slave trade
  • New Period = COMPLEXITY
